Welcome to Chicago!

On behalf of the 2024 NELC Annual Conference Planning Committee, we would like to welcome you to Chicago – a city that holds a special place in the heart and history of NELC.  As you may know, Chicago hosted the first NELC Conference and it will always be home for a number of NELC’s members, including our beloved friend and mentor to many, Rafael Medina. What better city for NELC to launch its NELC Awards to honor and celebrate him and his legacy as well as other  NELC members who have embodied the NELC’s founding principles by demonstrating a commitment to the organization, diversity, mentoring, and giving back to the community.  We are excited to start a new NELC tradition of formally recognizing the generosity and selflessness of our mentors, leaders, and friends at this and future Annual Conferences.

We are equally excited to continue NELC’s 29-year tradition of presenting unparalleled labor and employment programming featuring the best and brightest practitioners in the world.  That’s right, we are not only fortunate enough to have extraordinary panelists from across the United States presenting at this year’s Conference as we always do, but also this year’s programming includes experts practicing in Latin America, Europe, and India.  Such a diverse perspective continues to be essential in 2024 as our members continue “Navigating the Evolving Labor, DEI and A.I. Landscape,” which just so happens to be the theme for this 29th NELC Annual Conference.

Labor, DEI and A.I. topics continue to dominate the spotlight. This year’s program features Labor, DEI and A.I. specific panels that are sure to elevate the conversation and provide critical, nuanced insight on these issues and what the future has in store for us L&E practitioners.

We are also fortunate to have Bruce Jackson, Associate General Counsel at Microsoft, as our keynote speaker.  Mr. Jackson will be discussing his past and how it plays a crucial role in how he approaches these evolving issues, while he continues to help lead his company’s corporate diversity efforts.  While several of this year’s panels, such as NELC’s first international panel, will be addressing these issues from a unique perspective, NELC’s traditional employment law update, wage and hour, and the always entertaining ethics panels will be examining the latest trends and best practices for L&E counsel.  A powerhouse mergers & acquisitions panel will outline the L&E considerations that must be top of mind when counseling either the buyer or the seller side of the deal.  For you litigators out there, we have you covered as well with a panel tackling the nuts & bolts of arbitration and an interactive litigation workshop that will enable you to enhance your trial skills.  Finally, don’t miss the breakfast roundtable discussions on important substantive and career-development topics led by some of NELC’s exceptional junior members.

Thank you to the dedicated members of the 2024 Annual Conference Planning Committee who have been volunteering their time for months to develop this year’s outstanding program.  And of course, thank you to all of the panelists who have also volunteered their time to share their invaluable insight and expertise with all of us.  We appreciate all of your support.

We are grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with our NELC family and to welcome those who are attending their first NELC Conference in the city where it all started.  We hope you all enjoy the Conference and we look forward to seeing you in Chicago.
